Ingredient Substitutions

Using ingredient substitutions can make cooking feel a lot more relaxed and fun. When you swap things in and out, you’re not stuck following a recipe exactly—you can use what you have and try something new without overthinking it. Substitutions also make it much easier to cook for yourself or others with dietary restrictions, whether that means avoiding dairy, gluten, or certain allergens. Once you get comfortable making small changes, you’ll find that cooking becomes more flexible, less stressful, and way more enjoyable.

Substituting within the same food group is an easy way to stay flexible without changing the feel of a dish.

If a recipe calls for chicken and you have tofu, beans, or fish instead, you can usually swap it in and keep moving.

The same goes for things like grains, veggies, or fats—once you know what plays a similar role, you’re not locked into one ingredient.
