all about that base (rice, quinoa, pasta, farro)
Every good meal needs a hearty base to keep you fueled for the day, here are the basics you need to know.
Ingredients
- Jasmin Rice 2lb bag- $1.89
- Quinoa 30 oz – $6.19
- Farro 24 oz – $5.12
- Pasta 1lb – $2.00
Directions
- Rice – 2 parts water to 1 part rice. a little goes a long way. 1/4 – 1/2 cup rice is a good portion for a single serving of rice depending on your individual portion size. For 1/2 cup rice. 1. Add one cup water to pot, bring to a boil 2. Add 1/2 cup rice and 1/8 tsp salt to pot of boiling water. 3. Once the rice in pot is boiling (this will happen quickly) reduce heat to low, cover the pot with a lid and simmer for 20 min. Nothing as comforting a warm bowl of rice. Add to your recipe and enjoy.
- Farro – high in fiber, heart healthy, helps with blood sugar control. A great substitute for rice. Basically Farro is cooked exactly like rice only substituting Farro grains for rice grains, I like to add a little more water and drain any remaining liquid after the cooking process. For 1/2 cup farro. 1. Add 1 1/2 cup water to pot, bring to a boil 2. Add 1/2 cup farro and 1/8 tsp salt to pot of boiling water. 3. Once the farro in pot is boiling (this will happen quickly) reduce heat to low, cover the pot with a lid and simmer for 20 min. Drain any remaining liquid from the Farro, add to your recipe and enjoy.
- Quinoa – 1 part quinoa to 1.5 part water. 1. Rinse 1/2 cup Quinoa. 2. Add rinsed quinoa to pot with 3/4 cup water with 1/8 tsp salt or stock of your choice. 3. Bring to boil 4. Lower heat to low and simmer covered for 15min. 5. Turn off heat, let sit covered for 5 minutes, before lifting the lid. add to your favorite recipe.
- Pasta – a good portion size would be 1/2 cup to 1 cup dry pasta. Follow the instructions on the box, pasta cooking times vary. note pasta to water ratio is at least 1:4 make sure you use a good amount of water to boil your pasta in, salt your water before adding pasta you could use 1/2 – 1 tsp salt.
These are the basics for the base.
